cliffside wedding ceremony in Mendocino, CA

The Northern California Coast will forever have my heart. I am a born and raised California girl.. and it shows. Both in my work and in my personality. ;) The Northern Coast has so much to offer with it's dramatic viewpoints overlooking the pacific and towering redwood trees, rich in greens and reds and cooler climates. I firmly believe that no matter which venue you choose.. you can't go wrong!

Why Choosing the Right Venue Matters
Choosing the right venue is essential. It is the backdrop that shapes every other decision for your day - what style of dress are you wearing, what decorations to choose, and even, what time your ceremony even is! But most importantly, the venue is the backdrop for all of your wedding photos. That, my sweet friend, is a really big deal.
As a wedding photographer, I would strongly argue that your venue choice has the biggest impact on your wedding images. And after all the planning and dreaming... you live out your wedding day for one weekend and then it is in the past - leaving only the memories in your heart, the ring on your finger, and the photos that documented the day.
So... basically-wedding photos are obviously so important! Making them beautiful and wonderful is essential. Your wedding venue impacts that more than anything else (except maybe who your photographer is.. which is a whole other conversation entirely. Stay tuned for helpful information on that one soon.)
Step one. Decide to get married in Northern California. Just do it. Northern California Weddings are amazing and worth it.
Step two. Choose your venue well.
Step three. Choose your photographer well. (shameless plug for you to reach out to me here) :)
Here are some fantastic venue options worth considering:

1. Sea Ranch Lodge
This might be the "it" venue of the California Coast for 2026 - and it's every wedding photographer's DREAM. It is gorgeous and wonderful through and through. From cliffside views, tall grassy hillsides, and of course - a beautiful lodge aesthetic that ties the entire thing together... it's quite the vibe.
Set on over 50 acres of private land, its tucked away for untouched beauty and marvelous privacy. It is filled with a natural beauty that needs little to no decor- although I wouldn't say no to the right florals to add a cherry on top!
It has good food, ceremony options with a view, and indoor or outdoor reception spaces depending on your guest count and weather predictions. When I say it's a dream.. I mean it's my dream to shoot a wedding here because I can't imagine a more ideal space to celebrate something so significant with your loves ones.

2. Timber Cove
It will be tempting to choose something trendy or stylish when planning your wedding outfit - especially the bride and her girlies! Always consider your venue when choosing your wedding dress - vibes should always match. This includes the weather. It's for your comfort as well as for your photos. Wearing a summery, strapless dress in drizzly fog won't look nearly as good in your photos as something elevated and warmer. Additionally, light, flowing fabrics do look incredible catching the wind in photos, but you may want to pair your dress with a stylish bridal leather jacket, a chic pashmina, or a faux-fur wrap for later in the evening. (Think of it as a fun reception dress change!)
Don't forget your footwear! Coastal bluffs, redwood paths, and sand can be brutal on stilettos. Many coastal couples opt for a gorgeous pair of statement boots or elegant flats for their outdoor photos or ceremony, saving the dress shoes for the indoor reception.
5. Embrace the weather and style for it!
As a wedding photographer, I cannot highlight enough that the details matter. Pretending the weather is different than it is will effect your results significantly! It won't look right to have summer style in a spring, drizzly setting. Personally, I am exceptionally attached to the moody romantic vibes that the Northern Coast offers. Fog, dramatic cliffsides, and a little wind can great quite the stunning results!
Embrace it all - don't pretend it isn't there! If it rains or the fog rolls in heavily, don't fight it. Grab a few matching clear bubble umbrellas for you and your wedding party, step outside, and let the coast do what it does best—create an unforgettable, deeply atmospheric backdrop for your love story.
I will always emphasize that a wedding day filled with the unexpected, a little bit of mess, and authenticity is the best kind. Let things get real. Don't sacrifice the organic for curation - that is the secret to keeping your wedding day truly timeless and magical.

Navigating the elements is entirely manageable when you have the right team in your corner. Look for local vendors who live and work in the area—they know exactly how the wind behaves at specific bluffs, how the light filters through the trees at golden hour, and how to keep your day running smoothly, rain or shine.
