The California Coast has undeniable magic. With its towering redwoods, dramatic cliffside views, foggy hazy atmosphere, and crashing Pacific waves, it is one of the most breathtaking places to say "I do." (I may be biased, but I would argue that it's the only place to get married. ;) )
But if you are planning a coastal California wedding, you might be already worrying about the weather. You might already know the unique geography comes with a mind of its own. Unlike what many might think, the California coastal weather isn’t just a background setting—it’s a main character. From the sudden embrace of rolling sea fog to unexpected afternoon winds, a coastal celebration requires a bit of strategy.
If you are currently staring at your weather app or trying to figure out how to keep your guests warm without sacrificing your aesthetic, don't panic. Preparing for coastal elements ensures you can focus entirely on your partner—not the breeze.
1. Get Familiar with Coastal Microclimates
If you aren't a California native, you might assume it's all sunny skies and clear days. (That's mostly true!) However, one of the most surprising things about the California Coast is how drastically conditions can change over just a few miles.
While the majority of the state is indeed a case of very mild weather - do not ask me about extreme weather conditions because I am a baby 😅 - the coast is a bit more exposed to the elements. Mild and inconsequential in all scenarios except when it comes to planning an even like your wedding!
A venue nestled two miles inland among the redwoods might be a sunny, warm 72°F, while a bluff overlooking the ocean just ten minutes away sits at a misty 55°F. So once you have chosen your venue, consider it's microclimate. Unsure what that might be? Ask the venue owners or your vendor team! As a coastal wedding photographer, it is my job know what kind of weather we are signing up for in order to help you plan.
Other things to consider:

The "June Gloom" Factor: Summer doesn't always mean endless sunshine on the coast. June and July frequently bring heavy morning and evening fog.

Wind Alert: if you are anywhere near the beach (or cliffs), you will get high winds! In my opinion, that is an easy trade-off for the gorgeous views you are getting. But it's worth noting when making plans.

The Sweet Spot: Statistically, September and October often offer some of the clearest, warmest weather on the coast—though evening temperatures still drop rapidly once the sun dips below the horizon.
2. Master the Art of the "Plan B" (That Feels Like a Plan A)
Often, the idea of bad weather is just stress-inducing. Many couples will just ignore it and hope for the best instead of being prepared. Don't do it! Having a backup plan for coastal weather isn't a sign of defeat; it is the secret to staying relaxed. When touring venues, never just look at the best spot. Ask your venue about their weather plans to see exactly where guests will go if a sudden drizzle or heavy fog rolls in.
Pro-Tip: Don't assume that foggy and drizzly weather automatically means you need to jump to plan B. Some of the most stunning wedding images and memorable moments with your guests can happen in less than perfect weather. Be open to a little weather to see true magic happen!

3. Prioritize Guest Comfort
Your guests will remember how they felt far more than they will remember the exact shade of your floral arrangements. If they are shivering on a cliffside, they won't be fully present-no matter how intentional your wedding day is! This doesn't mean you can't navigate a little wind or fog. There are many ways to keep guests cozy and present in these scenarios.
Keep your loved ones cozy with a few thoughtful additions:

A Basket of Blankets: Place a basket of rolled fleece or faux-fur throws near the entrance of an outdoor ceremony space.

Warm Welcome Drinks: Swap out the pre-ceremony champagne for hot apple cider, artisanal tea, or a signature warm cocktail to take the edge off the ocean breeze.

Explicit Dress Code Tips: Use your wedding website to give guests a heads-up. A simple note like, "Our ceremony will be right on the coast. We highly recommend bringing a warm jacket or wrap and opting for thick heels or flats for the lawn," goes a long way.

A Kind Email during Wedding Week: one of the best "small touches" you can do is send a little love note out to all your guests the week beforehand. This email can include local attractions if they arrive a little early, parking information, and a weather update so they can plan appropriately!
NOTE: most weather predictions aren't truly accurate until at least 10 days beforehand - when planning my photoshoots, I always wait until 7 days out to truly get an accurate rain prediction. (Google weather can tell you rain by the hour at that point and is fairly accurate in my experience!)

4. Dress for the Elements
It will be tempting to choose something trendy or stylish when planning your wedding outfit - especially the bride and her girlies! Always consider your venue when choosing your wedding dress - vibes should always match. This includes the weather. It's for your comfort as well as for your photos. Wearing a summery, strapless dress in drizzly fog won't look nearly as good in your photos as something elevated and warmer. Additionally, light, flowing fabrics do look incredible catching the wind in photos, but you may want to pair your dress with a stylish bridal leather jacket, a chic pashmina, or a faux-fur wrap for later in the evening. (Think of it as a fun reception dress change!)
Don't forget your footwear! Coastal bluffs, redwood paths, and sand can be brutal on stilettos. Many coastal couples opt for a gorgeous pair of statement boots or elegant flats for their outdoor photos or ceremony, saving the dress shoes for the indoor reception.
5. Embrace the weather and style for it!
As a wedding photographer, I cannot highlight enough that the details matter. Pretending the weather is different than it is will effect your results significantly! It won't look right to have summer style in a spring, drizzly setting. Personally, I am exceptionally attached to the moody romantic vibes that the Northern Coast offers. Fog, dramatic cliffsides, and a little wind can great quite the stunning results!
